For the last 20 years, I have worked in the photographic trade, supplying clients and campaigns with a potential million or more versions of the same original – and a million potential ways to get it wrong. Everyone makes mistakes, in all areas of life, and as part of the learning process, we all have to start somewhere. In this blog, however, I offer some pointers – hoping to save you from some of the mistakes that amateurs shooting fashion, advertising or location photography tend to make from the very start. In my original post from 2024, I aimed to wake up photographers, both professional and amateur, who are fighting to make a living from their love or just stay creative in this fast-paced, oversaturated industry. This piece expands on that message.

Nowadays, taking a picture is about more than that. The ability to change with the times, know one’s own worth, and know how to progress are key. My 30 years of experience in the field and my observations of photographers’ successes and failures inform the following observations.

Overextending Oneself Too Rapidly

It’s easy to get caught up trying to be good at everything and end up failing miserably in portraits, weddings, street, commercial, and drone photography. That strategy causes market incoherence, weak branding, and creative burnout.

Photography, just like any other art form, demands focused attention. Make a name for yourself in a niche market. In contrast to generalists, clients have faith in experts. Get the hang of lighting. Edit more precisely. Get your name out there first. Whoa, you’re not a talking head. Visual storytelling is your forte.

Gear Obsession

The fallacy that more expensive gear automatically produces higher-quality images is a major pitfall. At some point or another, we’ve all bought into the illusion that a new lens, body, or light modulator would solve all our problems. Even with top-notch equipment, subpar results might be achieved by those lacking proper training.

Keep your attention on your timing, eye-hand coordination, and narrative skills instead. I once snapped a picture with a camera that was half the price of my current one, yet it still managed to capture the essence of my subject, the composition, and my intention. To me, that is paramount.

Skipping Over Continued Education

The creative and technical aspects of photography are changing at a rapid pace. People who believe they have learnt everything usually stop moving forward, whereas those who continue to explore continue to go ahead. You will not have much time to catch up in this industry. The playing field is always being redrawn as new styles, platforms, and technologies emerge.

Funding should be allotted for mentorships, online classes, books, and trial and error. Take aim at yourself instead than merely aiming for other people. Create a new project from scratch each year. Put your eyes to the test. Awaken your sixth sense. Quicker growth is what you can expect than from any course.

Impressing the Wrong People

Most fundamentally, stop trying to please the wrong people – yes, that old chestnut again – the loudest, most often most critical, and too often most garrulous voices on the web. the self-styled ‘photography nerds’ for whom proprietary, pixel-peeping is a mastery and a mantra. Who loves nothing more than to chip in with snide remarks about everybody else’s stuff, who insists on making ‘popular’ vs ‘professional’ criteria based purely on megapixel counts? But who (again, mostly) tend not to be photographers making a living in the here and now? Make work that speaks to clients, and audiences in three dimensions, not just to other photographers.

One of the first mistakes made by a beginner is to make lighting more difficult than it has to be. As a location photographer, this is a particularly easy trap to fall in, especially for the young photographer just starting and looking to make a splash. Here’s the thing about fancy lighting: fancy lighting is 10 per cent cheerleading and the other 90 per cent of the job has to go into figuring out what the hell you’re doing. Yeah, I do fancy lighting. I like fancy lighting. But sometimes I get to play with ridiculously complicated five-light ghetto setups for fun because it becomes kind of a puzzle. I’m trying this thing, I want to play with it. But by and large, approximately 90 per cent of the stuff I’ve shot this year has been a single light on the far side of the location on full power, doing the same job. What looked good? Yeah, it looked really good. No one wants what looks cool, to customer, they just want it to look good and tell the story of their product and service. You want to look good for their customers, not look good for the other photographers who show up.

The Obsession with Sharpness

And it’s a myth that sharper is always better. In most cases, some sharpening can improve a photo, but brutal over-sharpening – of any subject, but particularly a portrait – can verge on the downright brute. And the images coming from today’s cameras are generally sharp enough in the first place. The same of course goes for the mania for using wide apertures to over-blur the background to a silly degree (the bokeh effect). Again, opt for a halfway house, with the benefits of sharply articulated focus, but no loss of context.

Copying vs. Creating

It is important to imitate but, after that stage, it is important, too, that you make it your own. Vary those big chef techniques so you perfect them, put your twist on them, and then you can come up with things of your own. I believe, in the professional kitchen, that’s what you want to be doing. There are so many different techniques, and if you put your spin on it, you can get pretty much anywhere.

It’s not just the content of what you’re doing, the thing that you work on, that also needs to have a narrative, some kind of message behind it, and be somehow reflective of you. But even your existence as a maker, your brand, whatever it is…needs to have a narrative as an undercurrent to it. My YouTube persona of me is strict and hard-arse, while the great majority of my photographs head towards the frivolous, flippant, and downright silliness of me. Everything needs to be about the self and your work.

Pretty isn’t going to cut it anymore. Much more than just a pretty picture requires pointing your fancy phone towards the vista. Hell, you don’t even need to be a fancy soft-handed phone person anymore. Kids with flip phones are taking pretty pictures these days. Taking pretty pictures. What will make your photos stand out is that extra layer of content. That connection to ‘mood’ or ‘feeling’. That thing. That layer of ‘taste’ that elevates your work from ‘recent grad’ eye candy to something grown up and interesting. It’s not about your gear. It’s not about your technical wizardry. It’s about the story. It’s about the emotion. It’s about something beyond the technical. It’s about more. It’s about showing them but showing them. It’s about showing them something worth paying more for than your technical skill. It’s about your ideas. Your vision. Your creativity.

Exploring your own photography identity today

When I first picked up a camera, I had this zingy thing happen. I was 12, and it was my father’s old Pentax and 300mm lens, when I looked through the viewfinder, this kaleidoscopic vision captured me. It was a voyeuristic view of the world as you isolated a subject and froze this in time to review later. I found a passion for the Process and later went on to university, did a foundation course for the arts, and then specialised in photography for the next three years on a BA degree course. At that time in the ’80s, the system was second-best in the UK. Here I developed what I thought then as my own photographic identity. How wrong I was.

Fast forward thirty years to the present day, and you would think that I had already captured the very essence of my own photo identity. Over the years, I  have left photography a  few times.  This was to pursue another avenue in the creative industries during my career.

The only element which has changed for me has been the style and presentation of my work. This is best seen on my website www.jamesnader.com where my career at most seems eclectic, and there is a good reason for this. Over the years, working successfully as a fashion and advertising photographer has seen varying styles. A client loves your work and then books you for something else, and if you have no personal projects, you get driven down a dangerous path. This path of most resistance, and not the least, is what you meander down.

You see many photographers, fashion mainly shooting images and look busy. Shooting editorial magazine spreads and bobbing all over town. Then one day, as they say, I woke up and smelt the coffee. I realised that I have always shot around subjects and have, without realising, had some personal projects. These projects without prejudice help define a style inherent in me and some of my work but not always noticeable. I was shooting free and without restraint. I have for so long worked to clients directives and the art director brief with all the constraints of composition, style of light, location, and teams. I, therefore, have to admit that this has also been my path on occasion, shooting for profile images so I can get seen by potential clients. Shooting freely is incredible and where I started from. Over these last twenty years, I have, on occasion, shot images that stand out and are less contained in a creative vision. They have been my creative vision and ideas, which have sat on a drive or deemed not show worthy as they didn’t fit in with my mainstream marketing which was slightly avant-garde fashion.

I have shot projects of people with tattoo art, real people castings and typically take a camera with me on my vacations and trips for clients. Recce images that generally go in the photo bin are now out there!! My freedom of expression has been suppressed,

You can always shoot for pictures with the intention of submission to get your work seen to get booked and paid. The truth is out there. The Process of shooting for submission to get noticed no longer works, and so many people shoot for nothing to get visible, but how difficult is this nowadays?

My photographic personality is now part of my DNA. I mean that my actual Process has evolved from darkroom into photoshop, but the shooting process is always the same. Photo DNA is what you create over time, which helps you discover and maintain your photographic personality. Your mistakes define your success, and your Process represents your ability.

Photography has been, for me, a form of expression and art. But of late, my photography has become money generating. Now, in general, this is the same for many photographers. Consequently, we have fewer great photographers mainstream as budget diminish and more social influencers without any knowledge about the accurate Process of photography. Merely putting the new camera from Currys on auto and stating you are now a photographer in my eyes doesn’t suffice. There is, like anything, a steady analysis and learning process to understand. However, I am not taking it away from the guys online who are simply caning their genre or niche. Good luck to them for hitting the right note.

The reason for my interest was really the fact Millicent is an individual who is who she wants to be and lives live to the full in her chosen genre. We had worked previously and a couple of shoots and was my first go to character for a personal project.

I wanted to celebrate her uniqueness in the city of London where you could say she would fit in with the exccentric lifestyles of many individuals, I thought she added something a little different. I felt that to focus on shooting in and around areas in London where we could hilight her individuality may give the image a little more personality and of course the challenge was to capture her in an authentic way naturally and without promting. Our day was supercharged and ended with a few shots in and around Chinatown. We spent the day exploring areas and I was jst free capturing images when and wherever I thought would be appropriate. The results are in this feed, some of which went to Getty Images and these ones here I kept hidden for four years without anyone seeing them. With a nice polish up in Lightroom, Photoshop and then utilsing my presets i was able to capture these super looking black and white images.

How can you make money in Fashion Photography and how do you make money as a Fashion Photographer? I get asked this question so many times. It’s a tricky answer which a few years ago was really a simple answer. Since the explosion of social media and especially Instagram for Photographers, it has become increasingly difficult to find work out there. There are so many photographers now since the liberation of photography with digital photography and cameras.

The problem really is so much more about who you know and about relationships, although some photographers really do make it without following the traditional route that I followed. Becoming an influencer and being liked by your crowd seems to be an attraction to agencies, producers, brands alike and why? Well, its all about your reach. If you have a good reach then advertisers are more drawn to you rather then just your content.

%photographers blogBeing realistic, there is no great way of measuring an advert placed in a magazine easily apart from sales of the magazine and one increased sales, but not with any realtime metrics. These days it’s all about your metrics and your presence online. Being totally honest with you all. My jobs used to fly through the door. Most of my work happened via my website and direct bookings which led me onto some super brand work. These days this is less so and I have seen work go to the photographer who may not be that good and not have that many previous clients or indeed history in working with clients which was SO IMPORTANT even 5 years ago! If you have great metrics and an average style and you travel around a lot then you are prime estate.

I am fortunate in the fact that I have good social media and been around a while but going out there now is challenging. you have to NOT FOLLOW the crowds and really be yourself and follow your own instincts. There is a danger by following what everyone else is doing online then you are sinking in the mire of the photo has-beens! The sea is flooded with great photographers but ones who follow the crowd. I have in the past fallen into this category. I have followed the crowd and sunk, only to pick myself up again and sink again. You have to have a vision of destiny and of your end game. Be in control of this and you are on course to keep your head held high and above the water. Her re some ideas of how you can exist and make money to keep your dream alive.

What is content creation? well is just another name that people use just like a digital asset. Photography and more so the video is content creation. This is the new buzz word and in fact, the reason that I go quiet in my fashion productions is normally that I am content creating for brands outside of fashion too. I set up a production company called www.nadermedia.com and work as the director in this. The ability to shoot not just photography but video too is your strength and makes you more employable. Take your sill production ability into moving video content. Clients can sometimes not really know what to do with the content you create but here’s a tip. Manage their content with facebook ads!! learn this and you will be set up for life. A setup fee and then monthly payments as you manage the ads for your clients build a strong residual income. Do some post-production and retouching, editing and grading to upsell your work. If you can’t do this then learn how to!

 

SHOOTING EDITORIAL:

Shooting for an editorial has never paid much but its offset to give you coverage and credit. Magazines would always give credit but nowadays most magazines are going online so its a different audience. Editorial allows you to test out your style and show this to other brands who may book you. Sometimes shooting editorials is a great way to get your work seen across many social networks and a good collaboration should get you seen online which will allow your photographers profile to grow and then attract actual clients. This can also work with models and model tests.

TESTING MODELS FOR MODEL BOOKS:

Working with models is saturated, testing for model portfolios and shooting model books is a great way of building your brand. How? well if you do great shots that fit in with a model agency style or brand. Then the pictures are added to a book and to the model agency website. This increases your profile and gives your photography a platform to get seen. You can even get paid between £150-£300 per model shoot and so potentially good money in a day as you start out.

So how does this help? well the model adds their new images to their book and go out to view clients and potential work on go-sees, clients as they look through, will often ask shot a particular shot if they like it and then, of course, the model mentions your name. The model at the go-see also mixes with other models from other agencies and they look at each other’s pictures and this can lead you getting more model test photography for model portfolios. This is a great stealthy way of building your brand.

ADVERTISING CAMPAIGNS FOR BRANDS:

So now you have done the above two topics, shooting model portfolios and also shooting editorial plus the odd bit of content production. This gives you a good presentation portfolio. You are now open for business with brands. So starting off with small start-up business entrepreneurs is a great way to get further up the ladder. Often they have small budgets but want big productions! this work is a great way of building a relationship with the brand. As they grow so they come back to you.

You could set up an informal agreement which states that you agree to do these first few shoots at an agreed rate but as they grow their business, they will still use you a better price reflective of their position I the market. They retain your service. Not all like to do this method, some clients will use you to get their initial images then want to move on. Don’t listen to the ” next time we can pay you a better price” as they never do. They are using your creativity to bounce them up the ladder. Get some agreement in place, however, these startups are a great way to grow your brand and of course your content. As long as you are aware of this then you will be fine. Don’t get desperate

RETOUCHING & POST-PRODUCTION FOR PHOTOGRAPHERS:

If you’re great at retouching and post-production for your won work, then why not use those skills to do the same for other photographers? Photographers need retouching and whilst I do my own for certain work, it’s really important for me to know where I can get great retouching as firstly some clients request a specialist but other photographers don’t have the skills or even the time but require a great solution which of course can be you. Your style of retouching with a few changes might just be what another photographer requires. The best way to go about this is to post your work on Instagram. Instagram for Photographers is a super way to get seen and attract work. If you’re on the point then send out a DM to the photographer asking if you could do a test on their work. This could be just what you need to get seen. Your retouching seen on a great photographers’ feed will get you seen. They will do a shout out on insta stories on Instagram and help promote you

 

ASSISTING

When you first start off in photography either from university or by just wanting to change up into photography from another job. Assisting is a great way to get some skills and opportunity to see how its all done. However, I get approached daily by hundreds of aspiring photographers who wish to assist me. The truth is I don’t have space or the opportunity most of the time. Be prepared for rejection but if you are successful then assisting a photographer even on a per-day ad-hock basis is great to build your brand.

 

BECOME A STOCK PHOTOGRAPHER:

Stock photography can still net you a great monthly residual income, the challenge is creating content in suitable numbers to make a difference. I actually supplied images to stock and have around 4000 images in stock agencies around the world and it generates a basic income. The market is saturated and many images are out there, however finding your niche is essential to build your brand. Snapping away is great but a direction in what you want to have a focus in is essential to your success and selling images.

I will be doing a video and blog content demonstrating the process of shooting stock photography. As a fashion photographer or lifestyle photographer then you have a greater chance of capturing an image that can sell into fashion covers. Likewise, landscapes and editorial images also sell well and my best buddy owns a top London stock agency where my stock is. I can always supply a link and details if needed.

 

 

SHOOT E-COMMERCE:

E-commerce or e-comm are images shot for online selling and often quite plain in appearance. You can shoot them on white and most of the looks are quite static. So Assos is a good example as is Next. Shots are very simple and repetitive and can be priced per shot. Not much pr shot however but if you are shooting many then you stand to make good money. This work is normally more like a process and needs a regular rhythm and style to the images. Catalogue work needs the formula and if you get this correct you can pick up some lucrative contracts as not everyone wants to do these shoots. There is also the Hero shots that normally surround the page and give the lifestyle to the catalogue fell. These are normally taken by another photographer and most of the time on a location. Boohoo and Misguided are great examples of this. Great fashion locations and interesting fashion for e-comm websites that sell in volumes.

LOOKBOOK FASHION PHOTOGRAPHY:

Before the digital age, fashion photography lookbooks were physical books that fashion brands would have printed to showcase their latest collections. These would be sent out at shows and posted to potential customers and given to online retailers and stores. These would carry the brand message and today they have become digital. lookbooks are most essential and give an overall impression of this season’s look. It’s great to photograph these and mostly you get paid a lower rate than a campaign but you can line these up. These happen 2-4 times per year if not more. In the fashion industry, brands like Next will have newness added per month and this is a selection of new items every month which will need photography. Normally a day rate but add to your main lookbook shoot. Bigger companies will do more of these more often.

Today, most lookbooks are digital and live on a brand’s website. Some are designed like traditional lookbooks with slides of images that can be digitally “flipped through.” Others are more creative or interactive.

Essential Equipment Guide For Fashion Photography

This post will grow over the next few weeks. I have some new video clips being posted right now on my YouTube Channel which will give an insight into the knowledge you will need to get into portrait and fashion photography. A series of videos that will go into the ins and outs of my own go-to kit, discuss my basic travel lights and generally give you an introduction to becoming a fashion photographer and portrait photographer.

The module is still being written right now but in October we will begin shooting the first video for the project to be delivered early next year hopefully. Wedio – A Collaboration with James Nader

A few months ago I was contacted by a Danish company out of the blue cknown as Wedio, asking if I would be interested in a collaboration. A meeting of minds or more like a meeting of resources. As always I am a little reserved or sceptical about these online contacts and believe me I receive many. However, there was just something a little different in the way they were asking and what they were asking.

Normally collaborations like these can mean a cash sum of some description to me and some times they can be interesting amounts but here we were not talking cash but really they were asking if I would like to create a video all about me, my photography and the process I use, backed up by a second video all about some of my go-to kit for location fashion. I would normally not respond but really felt this was an opportunity to extend my reach to other photographers and another audience who could be interested in video and photography.

Wedio is based in Denmark and rents out, hire or share gear with professional filmmakers and photographers, they are beginning to create a new market share for hiring and sharing in London which is a great way to access kit rather than buy. Many creatives have their own kit which unless being used for their own shoots would simply sit in the corner of a room gathering dust in between shoots. They, therefore, connect free kit with a potential hire. My agreement with Wedio was initially to cover two videos for them to share on across their social media.

So whats in it for me you may ask?

The upside of the agreement was to gain access to their own platform and interested creatives but at the same time, I was in the process of working out how to update and become better and contributing to my own YouTube video production. It was one of those things which always gets left on the shelf based on other requirements taking precedent. I needed a new look to my own video content but I also needed to work within the confines of a smaller space at home which I had never used before and by them setting the task and deadline id pushed me to think and create a very nice looking youtube studio set up with Shure mic and some cool amazon LED light panels and the obligatory Edison warm glow lightbulbs which have to be on a dimmer so you can control their output and brightness for the video.

It pushed me!

I am very much a perfectionist in many ways but do let things slide around the edges, we can’t all be perfect, can we? I step up in a confined space the look I needed and recorded the video which had a very cinematic feel to it which was perfect for them. I had to work in a confined space, work out my sound inputs and outputs and of course create the perfect script to work from as I am not that brilliant on spec voiceovers and the camera captures.

The perfect pitch and how I perfected my YouTube video script.

I used the time to really get creative in my approach set me up for another video for my YouTube channel, so I set about bullet pointing my script, I then reviewed these bullet points and proceeded to grow these with content until I had a rounded script. It made much more sense working from a prepared script rather than trying to wing it which I have tried. With the final script, I set up for my big day with all going to plan. The final video was edited and sent and featured across social media for Wedio but out of this came another opportunity for a few more collaborations.

Some simple techniques for YouTube videos.

  1. Identify and refine your topic. Writing a killer YouTube script starts with identifying a topic that will resonate with your audience. …

  4. Deliver the goods. …
  5. Be conversational. …

The offering of a FUJI GFX50S

After the delivery of the video to Wedio we then developed our opportunity to keep this content going by offering content for each other’s platforms and in return, we agreed in principle that they would provide me with a lovely new Fuji camera which was my choice of the GFX50S and all based on how it worked for me whilst on my Icelandic campaign a few years back. I now have the camera and just done my first collaborative shoot last week. The results will be shared here on this platform firstly without followers.

Why you should speculate?

There is a feeling within the industry that you should not do anything for free! I would completely disagree with this and there is a caveat for doing this correctly. Of course, you shouldn’t do things for free unless there is some way of making it work for you. Speculation enhances your opportunities for new business and clients but also you can get taken for a ride. It can sometimes offer a new way of working which can bring in potential opportunities. I have at times done this and been taken for a ride but if you are careful and do your diligence then there are substantial benefits to this. I would not work for a brand on a campaign or shoot for free unless it was my collaboration and you can control the outcome. However working with Wedio has enabled me to get access to their platform, it has allowed me to develop my own YouTube presentations, they have promoted me on Instagram stories and TV and now I have a brand new FujiGFX50s for my own use for now.

What else can a colaboration do for you?

I thought that having all of the above covered was a great idea but collaboration allows you to become friendly with each other and speak about other vertical opportunities. I am at the moment developing my 1-2-1 Zoom consultations for photographers who are willing to engage and get learn some basics about their work, portfolio and the business of photography. This has been relatively successful so far and now looking to push it out to more creatives.

Wedio and I are now talking about an international Zoom 1-2-1 with James Nader very soon and my contact at Wedio has pushed tough my proposal of mine to do this with their platform of creatives which should be a benefit o both sides. Wedio gets a free Zoom group session for their followers with me and for me, it allows other creatives to see my work and maybe engage with me thus growing my numbers and awareness about my brand and what I am and will be offering over the next 12 months.

Never say never

I would say on reflection that collaboration or affiliation to another brand or business is a great thing. if you can agree on what the ground rules are for both right at the beginning. I am not sure how it will all move on over time, however, right now it’s a great fit for both as we both mutually benefit in our own way.

A Client’s conceptual vision expectations and a producer’s visuals set in stone, being a creative photographer based on thin ground can set you up for failure based just from a mood board back in the office in Germany. CREATIVE PHOTOGRAPHER BATTLING THE WEATHER WIND AND RAIN – A HERO SHOT

The client for this shoot was a large client based in Germany producer of biscuits and confectionary with over 1000 lines in chocolate and biscuits. Every year they create marketing images suitable for calendars and images for marketing their many tins of biscuits, but before you go ooh commercial work! the chance to create a selection of images that really differentiate themselves from competitors is key for them and as I have worked effectively for them previously on a 27 days shoot, the producer knew that I was able to deliver to images in challenging locations. Getting booked again by the producer was super as not only was it a three-week shoot but offered great money and a trip to Iceland, where I had been planning to create content to help promote a fashion masterclass there at the end of 2020.

SETTING UP FOR A CHALLENGING SHOOT – WEATHER & CONTRACTS

When your team is over 18 strong and we’re all working our way around the locations in the time allowed its strenuous for me as the lead in the team, not the producer! I am helping deliver the look for the client and I know it sounds really dramatic and poor me! but the producer’s actual vision changed without a backup plan which left the shoot in a tricky situation and yes the opportunity is great but the responsibility is now on my head to deliver something that can be used for this styled shoot and is pretty demanding.

If the look and feel for the shoot are not delivered or indeed if the client doesn’t like it then I don’t get paid and neither do the others. It was a slightly weird contract agreed by me with the German producer. We were to produce 24 images in 10 days which seems easy but to accommodate the wishes of the client and not allow for slip-ups then over 24 were needed.

WORKING THE TEAM BUT KEEPING THE TEAM HAPPY & ON POINT

Working out of the back of a campervan in the summer is not too bad, however, in the late Autumn, the weather in Iceland is a steady zero degrees Centigrade. There was no heating in the Campervans unless they were left running, not really allowed and frowned upon due to the global warming movement. Models, if they are on board with you, are really helpful and if you have a vision and you spend time explaining what you require, then you will get some great pictures regardless of the weather.

OLD PROFOTO BATTERY KIT WITHOUT LIGHT CONTROL

I have been asked many times about the behind, the scenes pictures which reveal that I did not use any light controls on the flash heads, why was this?

There are two reasons for this, the first and the easiest to answer was the wind and weather worked against this setup. I had intended to use a large umbrella or a metal beauty dish bu the wind was really too severe and would blow the control around or off. I personally don’t have a problem with this as it allows for more precise lighting which floods the subject offering a sharpness which is perfect for the edits later.

HOW SHOULD I WORK THE SHOT? MY INNER THOUGHTS

Heading off along the coast to the East of Iceland was our destination for a few days and this particular morning we were heading to the ice flows and were to be there by mid-afternoon. Along the way we happened across this rather lovely location next to a raging river which right away was chosen as another potential shot outside of the initial recce a few days earlier.

As we pitched up camp I had a quick flight of the drone to get some aerial footage for our video behind the scenes. It was quickly obvious to me that the problem was not just the cold and wind but the gale-force speeds that were increasing. The drone had flown over the ridge of the hill and suddenly slowed down to merely a 1mph hover. Nearly losing it in the prevailing wind I had to think really fast as to what I could do.

I worked out that utilising the light of the Profoto battery would freeze the action and as the client was looking for something a little different it was a chance to create a hero shot from not much. I thought underexpose the background and freeze the action would be great especially if I could get the perfect jump and positioning of legs dress, hair, etc,

I shot at the picture at 38mm on the fuji zoom lens 32-64mm
ISO for the shot was standard 100 ISO
Pixels for the image were 8256 x 6192
Shutter was 1/125
F Stop F10

The reason for the settings was as follows

The shutter to freeze the action and I could have gone faster but this was optimum for the underexposure of the background.

The lens was stopped down for crispness in the subject but not enough o make the location background seem oo sharp and so left it with softness. I needed to see where it was and place the model in a landscape and not throw it out of focus so this was controlled

The light was triggered at 1/125 which was perfect on this camera and the larger sensor to freeze the action but just allowing a slight and tiny movement on the edges of the model’s movement to give the model a sense of movement without being too much.

The problem was when jumping up to the light was really to get the perfect stance but to also dodge the shadow cast from the light on the model’s chest or face from the binoculars which also had to be in perfect alignment,

Working creatively is always a challenge in a location like this where the weather plays such an important part. Having the correct kit does make a difference in your production.
Working with the Fuji camera was a first but here we are reviewing some test shots which show no wind rain or movement. I was mixing daylight with flash to get the correct ambiance and to create the Hero shot needed.

YOU’RE JUST NOT CREATING GOOD CONTENT

Everyone is craving good content. For years Google has been looking for a way that businesses are not able to fool the SEO system and positioning in Google rankings, and they’ve finally found it with content marketing. Today in 2019, Google considers good content to be way more valuable than any SEO technique we could master. If your content is mediocre or not hitting your intended market then you will struggle to win and retain clients. I would also in my experience say that you must also know a lot about SEO and how to position yourself which I do and will be letting go all of my information in some YouTube videos soon.

Put yourself in your client’s shoes and address common pain points that have occurred with past clients. You like the work but the work is not on point. My clients have always been attracted to the high-end avant-garde images that I produce. The main problem is they don’t always want the style they need it toned down. Portfolio images attract the clients but 8 times out of 10 it’s not what they really want.

What you have to learn and what mistake I made early on in my career was even though I am a creative, when it comes to clients work their actual requirements are completely different and if you don’t take this in and understand the wishes then you will soon run out of good respectful clients. Make an effort to understand and to interpret their brief without adding too much where it is not required. Do this and you will be on a downhill slope.

Today a good photographer has to think of themselves more as a brand. That means a consistent brand. I really have sometimes fallen off the radar due to not keeping a focus on my branding. Giving out a mixed message and this has been a little problem for me on Instagram where I seem to have a few accounts giving a different message and a watering down my overall brand @jamesnader

I do production under the brand of www.nadermedia.com and have a fine art side to what I do. I have created a production business for various genres of photography and video production and would say really think of you the photographer as a brand and reflect this in how you walk, talk and think about what you do.

TREAT YOURSELF AS A BUSINESS – BUSINESS OF PHOTOGRAPHY

How many times have you seen a photographer whose work isn’t technically good, but they’re absolutely nailing it with their photography business? Client experience is a key factor in this.

As soon as you can you must really focus on the client experience here. When clients purchase my fashion photography or celebrity portrait services, whether they know it or not, they’re not just purchasing nice photos, they’re purchasing experience of my experience and how I work with them and make them feel. I make my clients feel special and don’t have an attitude and this is a reflection of me treating myself as a business.

Client experience defines my brand Nader or James Nader from the moment a client discovers my fashion and advertising work and our business, to the last email my business sends to our client once our services have been rendered. YOU HAVE A LACK OF DIRECTION

Loving what you do is a great start to going into business. Most photographers start their business because they have a love of material, technique or has a special skill or talent. The problem is that it doesn’t always work and when your creativity takes a blow this really can have a knock-on effect within your photography business. Most creatives can only take positive feedback and when things are not so positive this becomes a negative emotion. This can undermine your goals.

A lack of direction in photography and the business of fashion photography will soon set the cat amongst the pigeons. There is less and less work out there for people photographers. If you lose focus you will lose the plot. You have to be single-minded. It’s hard to get down to your bookwork when you have to make new contacts and then it’s even harder to make calls when you’re shooting and then look for new business. The truth is challenging to work as a photographer but lacking direction is your most difficult challenge to overcome. Get smart and have a plan with short term, mid term, and long term goals and stick to the plan. I have a plan and stick to this. Although realise that you have to be flexible and sometimes change the outcomes on the fly

YOU’RE BEING TOO CREATIVE AND NOT COMMERICAL

All I can say from my own experience is, you must have some diversity in your approach. Getting creative is cool but you need to think of this ion commercial terms. Ther are not many brands out there anymore who want high-end fashion work and even the top level of fashion photographers are now feeling the pinch. Being a good fashion shooter in an avant-garde style has worked for me but to be honest there has been a drop in this style demand for commercial clients.

It’s great to say that you shoot fashion and portraits but really you have to be able to other types of work. There are many fashion photographers boasting about their work but are not making any money and flying all over the world, and it’s great to shoot for magazines this gives exposure, however, editorially speaking not much money if any crosses your palm. I make sure that I can shoot fashion but also make it work for advertising clients. I prefer to work where I can make money and sometimes this crosses into the advertising style of shooting but for me, keep the avant-garde fashion for fine art and role with those commercial jobs when you can.

  1. Most small business owners work in their business rather than on their business.
  2. People who are exceptionally good in business are so because of their insatiable need to know more.
  3. Understanding the technical work of a business does not mean you understand a business that does that technical work.

SOME INTERESTING POINTS FOR A PHOTOGRAPHER GOING INTO BUSINESS SHOULD KNOW OR AVOID

  • “If you are unwilling to change, your Photography business will never be capable of giving you what you want.”
  • That Fatal Assumption: if you understand the technical work of a business, you understand a business that does that technical work.
  • The Entrepreneurial Seizure: the moment you decide it would be a great idea to start your own business.
  • The technician suffering from an Entrepreneurial Seizure takes the work he loves to do and turns it into a job.
  • “Everybody who goes into business is actually three-people-in-one: The Entrepreneur, The Manager, and The Technician.”

Go to work on your business rather than in it, and ask yourself the following questions:

  • How can I get my photography business to work, but without me can this happen? If not then create your brand and a business around you.
  • How can I get my people to work with me and develop a brand or band of people working under my brand
  • How can I systematize my business in such a way that it could be replicated 5,000 times, so the 5,000th unit would run as smoothly as the first? You are the photographer with the style but a style can by systemised – decide on who you are and what your photography business genre is
  • How can I own my business, and still be free of it? if not work out how your brand can work around you but also without you – Rankin does this well1
  • How can I spend my time – do I have enough free time? do I need to add a system to keep it running hen not there or ill?
